2009 is almost over!

As I sit here listening to Rod Stewart’s new CD – “Soulbook” and thoroughly enjoying the music, I ponder over the events of 2009. It has been a roller coaster of a year. In Sept 2008, myself and 49 other folks were given the opportunity to seek other avenues of employment. My last day was January 29, 2009. I had 4 months to deal with the emotions of that announcement. I had worked for this company for over 35 years and had hoped to retire at 65. Alas, apparently it wasn’t meant to be. I was given a good severance package, certainly not enough to make it for 7 years until retirement, but some room to decide what to do. Of course, the recession hit us big time, but I still worked not to be dragged under the emotions of the day. A week after my last day, my son-in-law also lost his job. My daughter was on maternity leave with benefits ending in April. In May, we published our Online store – Handbag Gems. One thing that I have learned through this whole process is apparently it takes time for these websites to start earning an income. Apparently a lot longer than the money I have to live while waiting…….But I will continue, work on other things to try to make money and hope the site will take off.

How was your 2009! If you had a great year, I wish continued success for 2010. If your year was like mine or worse, I wish for health, happiness and prosperity for the 2010!

Oprah – A Classic Success

“I don’t believe in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process.” – Oprah Winfrey

By now, we have all heard the announcement that Oprah will be ending her daily television show after 25 years. What an achievement for this lady! She has been an inspiration to millions of people over the years. I would suspect that it would be challenging to keep her show as fresh and innovative as she has. A lot of that success belongs certainly to all of the people who work with and for her, but much of the credit needs to go to Oprah. She as the leader of her production team and obviously has been motivating to keep the show with the quality it has had for so long.

Although, as a working mom, I really never had the opportunity to watch her show during the weekdays, but this lady was able to peak the interest of a 79 year old man – namely my father to watch her show, so she is doing something right.

Good luck Oprah in whatever you may do in the future……..

The Ugliest Purse in the Whole Wide World

November 10, 2009

I wonder how many men buy purses for as a gift for their “special ladies”. Now I am not talking about being given the exact style, colour etc, but on their own without any prior input from the “lady”. And secondly, when the lady received it, did she like it!

That happened to me when in the early years of my marriage! It was our first Christmas as husband and wife (plus baby). He had gone out and did his Christmas shopping all on his own. Christmas morning, I opened up this gift and yes it was a purse! But in my own mind, it was without a doubt the ugliest purse I had ever seen. First of all it was brown – while I think brown is wonderful colour for a chocolate bar, it is definitely not my first choice for a fashion colour for me in fact it doesn’t even make the list. It was a fake animal skin, honestly can’t remember what kind. It was a large satchel bag with a zippered top opening. Inside there were only a few compartments. I think the reason I thought it was sooooooo ugly was the colour. Did I say I hate brown as a personal choice for a fashion colour?

There I sat Christmas morning believing that I had the ugliest purse in the whole wide world. I swallowed my distaste, regurgitated my joy and said, Oh Honey, it’s beautiful. Thank you so much! Trust me, I almost choked saying those words. I do have to give him credit for even going out to buy the gift. That being said, the marriage started going downhill from that point on and no it wasn’t because of the purse, but trust me, the purse didn’t too long in my closet.

Anyone have a story about the ugliest purse in the whole wide world?
