The Ugliest Purse in the Whole Wide World

November 10, 2009

I wonder how many men buy purses for as a gift for their “special ladies”. Now I am not talking about being given the exact style, colour etc, but on their own without any prior input from the “lady”. And secondly, when the lady received it, did she like it!

That happened to me when in the early years of my marriage! It was our first Christmas as husband and wife (plus baby). He had gone out and did his Christmas shopping all on his own. Christmas morning, I opened up this gift and yes it was a purse! But in my own mind, it was without a doubt the ugliest purse I had ever seen. First of all it was brown – while I think brown is wonderful colour for a chocolate bar, it is definitely not my first choice for a fashion colour for me in fact it doesn’t even make the list. It was a fake animal skin, honestly can’t remember what kind. It was a large satchel bag with a zippered top opening. Inside there were only a few compartments. I think the reason I thought it was sooooooo ugly was the colour. Did I say I hate brown as a personal choice for a fashion colour?

There I sat Christmas morning believing that I had the ugliest purse in the whole wide world. I swallowed my distaste, regurgitated my joy and said, Oh Honey, it’s beautiful. Thank you so much! Trust me, I almost choked saying those words. I do have to give him credit for even going out to buy the gift. That being said, the marriage started going downhill from that point on and no it wasn’t because of the purse, but trust me, the purse didn’t too long in my closet.

Anyone have a story about the ugliest purse in the whole wide world?

Saving Time

“One day I just said….What if this is just what I look like, and nothing I do changes that?  So how much time would I save if I stopped taking that extra second every time I look in the more to call myself fat?….An it turns out I save about ninety-two minutes a week.  I can take a pottery class.”

Words of Inspiration for the Every Day Women!

Ladies, moving forward  I like to refer to you all as my “Gems” because I believe all women are beautiful both inside & out.  I am starting this post as a place where we can post quotes from people that inspire us.  Please feel free to update with your favourite quote or use any quote for your selves.  Just remember to credit the originator of the quote if known.

May all the Gems in this world be inspired to be the best they can be with these words and I hope these “pearls of wisdom” will support you in some way as you meet the challenges or joys of your daily life.

To start you off today, here is the first one.

“It isn’t until you come to a spiritual understanding of who you are-not necessarily a religious feeling, but deep down, the spirit within-that you can begin to take control.”

-Oprah Winfrey

What’s in Your Handbag?

While searching for interesting facts about handbags I found this article   published in Time magazine on January 31, 1945.   It was titled:  “The Contents of a Handbag – Revealed”.   It basically states that a woman’s handbag is her “treasure chest”.  A movable object that holds all the essentials a woman may need at a split moment in any situation.  The handbag in 1945 held a mysterious aura that no man would dare to tread upon.  That is still holds true today 64 years later.

Men may wonder why handbag design have so many styles – 27 different styles in the site I found, with sizes ranging from extra small, to extra large or even bigger.  Never mind materials range from animal skins, plastics, vinyl,  polyurethane (imitating leather/suede) to the gamut of fabrics in as many colours that would put Crayola Crayons to shame. I tell you, give a man a red toolbox, black tackle box, blue bowling bag, black duffle bag and green golf bag  and he is a happy camper.  However, we won’t bring up the subject of the Tool Contest, you know that contest where the man who dies with the most tools wins!

But wait,  don’t ask a man to get something from your purse.  My daughter & I have on occasion asked her husband to get something from our handbag.  He quietly goes to the purse, brings it directly to us, carefully carrying the strap on one finger with his arm out stretched as far as it can be.  He then reverently hands the bag to us  saying “I really don’t want to go into your purse.  You get it”.  I am not sure if he is afraid he will find something he doesn’t want to see, or he won’t be able to find it in the same amount of time we could.

Now, I am not afraid in the least bit  to tell you what is in my purse.  At this very moment my purse holds car keys, house keys, wallet, cell phone, errand list, eye glasses (to be repaired), pen with no cap, eye glass cleaning cloth, website business cards, digital photo album, a leash ornament from the Farley Foundation (from the vet for giving a donation), cough drop wrappers and finally as always, the usual bits of minute pieces of paper.

Ladies, I challenge you to tell us all – What is in your purse!!!!!!!
